We take plastic water bottles from the ocean and make them into leggings. PlayerLayer Athletes have been testing these leggings and say that they are best and most comfortable leggings they have ever used. Are these the world's best leggings?
A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute and the number will jump another 20% by 2021, creating an environmental crisis some campaigners predict will be as serious as climate change. Between 5m and 13m tonnes of plastic leaks into the world’s oceans each year to be ingested by seabirds, fish and other organisms. By 2050 the ocean will contain more plastic by weight than fish, according to research by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
The employees at PlayerLayer have decided that we should play our part in solving this crisis. We are part of an industry which contributes in many ways to environmental and sustainability issues.
We take old water bottles and chop them into tiny pieces which can be used as the basic ingredient for our yarns, which are then spun into fabric. It takes 25 water bottles to make one pair of leggings.
The bottles are shredded into tiny chips which are cleaned and then used as the base raw material. They are heated and extruded into new yarn. This yarn is then knitted into high quality, high stretch and soft touch fabrics. This beautiful fabric, combined with the athletic high waist, make the leggings effective and comfortable.
